This morning, we all got up early to walk to school. Because Gus is a great big five-year-old who goes to school now. He was so excited, so happy to be walking to school wearing his new backpack containing the lunch he helped pack. So proud of his new crayons, his shiny new sneakers, and his snazzy little polo shirt.
Wasn't he two, like, a week ago? I remember when Dashing Husband and I moved into this house, happy because the elementary school was less than a mile away. I've been anticipating this day since Gus was born.
Of course, I never thought I'd see this day. I hope the kid loves school. I hope his teacher is understanding and that she likes challenging-and-occasionally-obnoxious little boys. I hope the other kids want to be his friend. I hope he's not overwhelmed by the noise in the cafeteria, and that no one makes him cry.
I hope the wide, wide world will be kind to my son.
Here's a couple of bonus pictures:
Will was not to be outdone by Gus. He insists that he's five, too. Of course he is.
And this, folks, is a picture of me on MY first day of kindergarten (my sister is on the left, and my brother is in the middle). I LOVED that sweatsuit. It was so pink and covered with sheep. Also, I'm digging the braided side ponytail. Ah, 1984.
OMG, Jak going to school has me in tears! I know I will be a wet noodle when it is time for Ise to go...I am already getting all emotional about him and its still a year away!
Look at Will, that doesnt even look like him, crazy nut!

I am surprised that you failed to mention your best friend, Freddy The Frog, who is tucked under your left arm in that picture.

I remember sending Rose to school and thinking now what? What do I do with my days? What will she do with out me?
